Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The position is with the research group of Johan Elf and is part of a KAW funded project that aims to map the physical principles for how proteins search for specific sequences in the genome or transcriptome. We offer a stimulating interdisciplinary research environment where you will work in close collaboration with microbiologists, microfluidics engineers, biophysicists, computer scientists, optical engineers, biochemists, and molecular biologists. Our general mission is to assemble the scientific puzzle that describes the central aspects of life at the molecular level. For more information about the research in the Elf group, visit (http://elflab.icm.uu.se)

Duties/Project description: This project is an interdisciplinary collaboration of researchers in biology, engineering, and physics, and you will work closely with several of these groups  (Please read more on http://elflab.icm.uu.se/kaw/agile). You will use and develop new single molecule /single-cell tools that make it possible to connect changes in genomic DNA sequence to changes in intracellular kinetics for thousands of different bacterial strains in parallel. You will construct and phenotype large genetic libraries with respect to complex dynamic intercellular processes. The project aims at understanding the principles for sequence specific target localization in the intracellular environment.

You will run the project independently, and although you will have much freedom to test your own ideas and hypothesis within the framework of the research plan, we encourage you to take advantage of the ample expertise that exist in the group.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in microbiology, biophysics or in another related area, which the employer considers as equivalent. Your PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We are also looking for someone who has a genuine passion for quantitative microbiology and for the biophysical principles that characterize living beings.  You have a self-motivated personality with a keen interest in fundamental science. You have documented experience in solving scientific problems. Since the position is located in an international environment, excellent knowledge of English, both orally and in writing, is a must. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as excellent collaboration skills, as we expect you to share your knowledge with other team members.

Additional qualifications:

  • Good programming skills
  • Good knowledge in microbiology
  • Experience with biophysical methods development
  • Experience with bacterial strain construction

Your application should include:

  • CV including a list of publications.
  • Cover letter (maximum one page)
  • Names, e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers for three reference persons.
