Duties/Project description: The PhD position is part of the research project Engaging Vulnerability, funded by the Swedish Research Council and hosted by Uppsala University. The multidisciplinary project unites scholars and PhD students from various academic disciplines, and aims to develop a deeper understanding of the notion of vulnerability by building on perspectives rooted in philosophy, anthropology, epistemology, literature, aesthetics, and more.

In aesthetics, the theme of vulnerability can be approached by exploring themes such as bias in aesthetic evaluation, aesthetic trust, standards of objectivity, advantage and disadvantage in aesthetic judgement, accountability and obligation to artworks, artistic blame in artistic creation and interpretation, and more. 

Requirements: Please note that admission for the PhD position at Uppsala University is highly competitive. The successful candidate will have a solid academic background and training in philosophical aesthetics and have completed a Master degree (or equivalent) in philosophy or aesthetics.

Your application should include the following: (i) a brief CV, outlining your academic progress to date; (ii) a statement of approximately 3-4 pages outlining your proposed research; (iii) a writing sample (e.g. your MA thesis or equivalent); (iv) copies of diplomas or equivalent documentation of eligibility and academic qualifications; (v) two reference letters.

Postgraduate studies extend over a four-year period. The successful candidate will be employed by the Department of Philosophy for four years full-time. As employees, they will be eligible for Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave. The starting salary is currently 27,300 SEK/month. Toward the end of the studies, when 80% of the programme has been completed, the salary will be approximately 32,900 SEK/month. PhD students are expected to engage in their studies full-time, and to participate in the activities of the Department of Philosophy. The position might also involve teaching and other assignments, amounting to no more than 20% of full-time employment.
