The Department of Mathematics conducts research and provides education at undergraduate to graduate level in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. The number of employees is 120, of which approximately 30 are doctoral students.

Duties/Project description: Research in the project “Continuous Methods in Deep Learning” connected to the WASP graduate school https://wasp-sweden.org/graduate-school/

The purpose of this project is to develop and contribute to the field of continuous models/methods for deep neural networks with particular focus on (systems of) ordinary differential equations, stochastic differential equations and partial differential equations. The focus of the project is to gain a deeper understanding of three of the key problems in deep learning: optimization through methods like Stochastic Gradient Descent, regularization through methods like dropout and the problem of generalization. Currently a satisfactory understand of these fundamental problems in deep learning is lacking.

The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at his/her own research education, which lasts for four years. The work may also involve, to a limited extent (maximum 20%) other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to maximum five years.
