Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Duties/Project description: The late phases of stellar evolution are dominated by the interplay of energy production in the stellar interior and mass loss by an outflow from the atmosphere, i.e. a stellar wind. The material transported away from the star by the wind contains newly produced elements and dust, which are the building blocks for new generations of stars and planets. At the Division of Astronomy and Space Physics we study the physical mechanisms which drive the winds of cool luminous giants, and which determine the properties of the outflows, by developing advanced dynamical models and comparing them to observations. The main task of the new researcher will be to contribute to an improved theoretical description of dust-driven mass loss by cool giants, applicable to stellar evolution models, by producing and analysing extensive grid of dynamical atmosphere and wind models for both M- and C-type Asymptotic Giant Branch stars. The research environment at the division is characterised by an interplay between theoretical and observational work, and the holder of the researcher position is expected to put the modelling results in the context of state-of-the-art observations.

Requirements: The applicant is expected to have a PhD degree within Physics, Astronomy or similar. Good communication skills in English is required.

Additional qualifications: We are particularly looking for candidates with experience in implementing realistic mass-loss descriptions in stellar evolution models. Experience in providing the scientific community with observables covering large ranges of important stellar parameters is also a merit, as well as having the necessary skills to improve our understanding of stellar winds in the early Universe.

The application should include a statement of research interest and relevant experience, CV, certificates of degrees, list of published articles and other relevant materials. Also, contact details of reference persons can be included.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
