Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Duties/Project description: The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University invites applications for a temporary researcher position in atomic astrophysics, to work within the project “Probing charge- and mass- transfer reactions on the atomic level” grant, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. The researcher is expected to work with development of methods for calculations of electron transfer processes in (slow) atomic collisions relevant to the physics of stellar atmospheres, as well as corresponding experiments at the DESIREE facility at Stockholm University (desiree-infrastructure.com). The aim of the work is to make advances with regards to atomic data and processes, non-LTE- and 3D- modelling relevant to solar-type (F, G, K) stellar atmospheres and their spectra.

The position includes adequate funding for computers and travel. The successful applicant will also have the possibility to access SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing), and will be encouraged to apply for beam-time at the DESIREE facility.

Requirements: The applicant is required to have a PhD degree within Physics, Astronomy or similar. Good communication skills in English are required.

Additional qualifications: Experience from work within theoretical atomic (astro)physics and/or quantum chemistry, quantum calculations of charge transfer processes in atomic collisions, as well as experience in working with experimental facilities such as DESIREE, is desirable.

The application should include a statement of research interest and relevant experience, CV, certificates of degrees, list of published articles and other relevant materials. Also, contact details of reference persons can be included.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
