Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer Courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit http://www.pcr.uu.se.

The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

To the Department and UCDP, we are now looking for a research assistant for a full-time employment of 12 months, starting in February 2020.

Work assignments: The tasks consists of assisting the project management mainly by coding violent events from news articles and other sources into the UCDP's database with a special focus on Syria and the rest of the Middle East. Text writing to varying degrees will also be included in the tasks.

Qualification requirements: The applicant must have:

• Bachelor's degree in Peace and Conflict or Political Science
• Good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
• Independent analytical ability
• Very good English in speech and writing
• Very good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
• Previous experience of similar data collection work in the field of conflict.

Desirable / meritorious in general: Master's degree in peace and conflict studies or in political science. Experience of data collection, with a focus on Syria and the rest of the Middle East.
