Uppsala University, Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences

Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences has 140 employees and a number of visiting researchers and fellow students. The department has twelve research groups with a common administration and we are doing research and teaching in pharmaceutical cell biology / biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical and drug addiction, pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacometry, clinical pharmacy, bioinformatics, imaging mass spectrometry, molecular neuropharmacology, immunology, biological drugs / biotechnology as well as toxicology and drug safety. More information about the department and its activities can be found at www.farmbio.uu.se.

Placement: The PhD student position is associated with the research group Pharmacometrics, and will have a main focus in oncology.

Duties: The project will involve development of pharmacometric and systems pharmacology-like models, through pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles. The studies aim to qualitatively and quantitatively improve the understanding of vaccines to be administered in cancer (vaccines for bacterial infections may also become relevant). Mechanistic models for other types of cancer treatments are also of interest, for example in leukemias when drug effects are delayed and not directly related to the observed variables, and where a more detailed mathematical description of the mechanistic pathway can add value. The developed models aim to better understand relationships between the regimen of the administered entities and the clinical outcomes. The data for model building will be obtained from in vitro and in vivo studies, and from clinical trials. Data and information will also be retrieved from the literature to describe the mechanistic pathways.

Requirements: The applicant should have an MSc degree in a relevant area, such as pharmaceuticalsciences, or medicine, or other similar education with minimum 240 credits, including courses in pharmacokinetics, physiology, pharmacology, programming (R), and pharmacometrics.

The applicant should be highly motivated and have a genuine interest in research in the field of pharmacometrics and systems pharmacology. Additional qualifications include experience of mechanism-based modelling and/or modelling in oncology. The applicant is expected to have excellent skills in oral and written English.

The applicant should also have good collaboration skills to interact with different research groups. Moreover, the applicant should have the capability to drive the research project in a structured and methodological way.

Information about research-level education, eligibility requirements, and admission regulations can be found at http://www2.medfarm.uu.se/utbildning/forskarniva/. Applicants will be ranked by the supervisor in consultation with the Department Research Education group. The Committee for Research Education at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine-Pharmacy will admit the PhD student. Salaries will follow local guidelines at Uppsala University.

Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines  http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English. The holders of PhD student position primarily devote their time to own research-level education. Other duties at the Department involving teaching and administrative tasks maybe included in the framework of the position (max 20%). The PhD program normally lasts for 4 years research, plus maximally one year of teaching.

Application: The application should include a letter with a brief description of research interests and relevant experience in relation to the requirements and qualifications listed above, a CV, copies of diplomas and certificates, thesis as well as other relevant documents that the applicant wish to refer to.
