Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a researcher position to work with accelerator physics. The department is the second largest department at Uppsala University with more than 360 employees and 11 different divisions, and is situated at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. The department is hosting the FREIA Laboratory, where research towards future particle accelerators is performed, with special focus on the European Spallation Source (ESS), the High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC at CERN and the development of free-electron lasers in Sweden.

The candidate is offered the possibility to work in an exciting modern research area and will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with leading experimental and theoretical groups locally as well as globally.

Description of Subject Area: The candidate will, in collaboration with other members of the FREIA Laboratory, work on the design and development of a proton accumulator ring required for a future upgrade of the ESS. This upgrade will enable the production of a high-flux neutrino beam for the ESSnuSB project, which intends to measure, with precision, the leptonic CP violation. The accumulator ring will be used to compress the ESS linac pulses as required for the operation of a new dedicated target for the neutrino production. The goal is to develop an accumulator on the ESS site, fulfilling the footprint and connectivity requirements, that guarantees a stable beam with maximum intensity at extraction and limited beam loss. All this to limit radiation, to maximize the intensity on the neutrino target and to limit the cost of the accumulator.

Work Description: Design of the accumulator, in particular, the beam injection and collimation system. The task will be, through numerical simulations and calculations, to study the injection schemes to minimize the injection beam loss and to design the collimation system with high efficiency to localize the controlled beam loss. In addition, contribution to other parts of the project is expected, for example to development of a transfer line and of the system for fast extraction from the ring. Regular presentations of the different development steps will be necessary, in the presence of specialists on the different topics, in Uppsala and at other laboratories.

Prerequisites: The applicant must at the start of employment have passed a doctoral examination, in physics or a related area, and have experience in accelerator physics and of beam dynamics of proton synchrotrons. Excellent capabilities to perform research shall be demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or at important conferences in the accelerator domain. Solid knowledge of particle tracking and beam optics codes is a requirement. We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in academic research and an interest to collaborate and exchange competences with other accelerator physics centers in Europe and who is willing to travel for that. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required, as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team. The candidate shall take responsibility for the project, possibly assist in student supervision and education, be innovative and have a genuine interest in physics and technology.

Applications shall be submitted in English or Swedish and must include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, CV, copies of certificates and diplomas, list of publications and other documents which the applicant wishes to claim. We ask that you clearly identify publications and provide names and contact details of at least two referees and/or attach recommendation letters.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
