Opening of a four-year PhD position: Seeking a motivated, technically skilled and creative PhD student for a highly interdisciplinary project funded partially through the SciLifeLab network and housed in the Evolutionary Biology Center (EBC) at Uppsala University, Sweden.
Project description: The focus of this PhD will be on developing novel tools to enable measurements of metabolic rates for ecologically relevant single marine phototrophs. The student will apply these methods to assess the singular- and combined impacts of environmental change on cells- with a focus on heterogeneity within populations. The student will have the unique opportunity to learn, develop and apply a range of cutting-edge experimental techniques, including microfluidic technology, state-of-the-art microscopy, microrespiration and PAM fluorometry. Findings will help significantly advance our ability to predict the response of marine microorganisms to environmental perturbations.
Duties: Specific tasks in this project include (i) the design, development and operation of a microfluidic platform to measure single-cell metabolic rates, (ii) using this platform to measure the impacts of environmental and chemical stressors on model organisms via PAM-fluorometry and (iii) analyze the resulting data.
Requirements: Highly motivated candidate with a degree in Engineering, Physics, Microbiology, Plant Physiology or other relevant background. A person meets the general entry requirements for doctoral/third-cycle /PhD education if he/she has been awarded advanced/second-cycle/master qualification (i.e. master degree) comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded on the second-cycle/master level. In this lab, we are looking for candidates, who can creatively contribute to interdisciplinary work, are highly independent and who thrive in an informal, hands-on lab with a flat hierarchy and friendly people. Candidates should have excellent communications skills (written and spoken English) and a good scientific record of accomplishment.
Additional qualifications: Documented experience in microfabrication and use of clean room facilities is a merit, as is a good working knowledge of biological systems and variable chlorophyll fluorometry techniques (e.g. PAM).
Position: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. The PhD-position is a 4-year appointment, and the candidate will primarily devote the time to research. Other departmental work, such as teaching and administration, can be part of the position (maximum 20%) which then extends the position with corresponding amount of time. Salary placement is in accordance with local guidelines at Uppsala University. The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies at Uppsala University. Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1. More information about research education can be found at the web site of the Faculty of Science and Technology, http://www.teknat.uu.se/Doktorand/.
Applications, applicants should include:
1) A letter of intent in which you describe yourself, your research interests and motivation why you would like to pursue a PhD (max. 2 x A4 pages, ideally shorter)
2) A short description of your education
3) Your CV (including publication list, if available)
4) A copy of your Masters certificate and course grades
5) Two references with names and contact information (phone and email)
The application should be written in English.
In filling this position, Uppsala University aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute positively to the development of the department.
