The position announced here is with the International Maternal and Reproductive Health and Migration (IMHm) research group at the International Maternal and Child Health Unit (IMCH) at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, Uppsala University.
The department is a leading research and education centre at the national and international level, and works for improved global health with special emphasis on women’s and children’s health, nutrition and migration. The research group strives to develop practical solutions and provide evidence based knowledge to healthcare professionals and policy makers to improve the sexual and reproductive, and migrant health and related services. The group has garnered national and international attention for its pioneering research in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Migration and has been successful in obtaining large research grants to continue its efforts to reduce inequality and promote equitable global health. More information about the research group can be found here.
The research group has recently received a strategic national research grant, as part of the Swedish Government’s national research programme in migration and integration, to improve the knowledge on how value conflicts and cultural change are to be managed in the health care sector. The core challenge we explore is how health care providers may incorporate gender equality perspectives and culturally sensitive care, as indicated by health policies and guidelines, where some of the aspects might be contradictory. One of the main aims of the project is to explore the similarities and differences in cultural values between the Swedish healthcare providers and migrants. During clinical consultations, sensitive topics such as reproduction, comprehensive abortion care, and sexuality can lead to tensions and misunderstandings between healthcare providers and migrant patients and ultimately to suboptimal care. Research on how healthcare systems handle these challenges is scarce.
The advertised position is to work as a researcher in the group contributing to achieving the goals of the project. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the project in liaison with an already established interdisciplinary team of researchers. The team consists of clinicians in Reproductive Health care , public health researchers, anthropologists and mathematicians based at several research institutions in Sweden.
The advertised position is for an initial period of one year with the possibility to extend.
