Duties/Project description: A PhD student position is available for highly motivated individuals with an interest in bioinformatics to join the laboratory of Assoc. Professor Kim Kultima at Uppsala University, Dept. of Medical Sciences, Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Kultimas research group has a focus on mass spectrometry-based methods in clinical metabolomics.
Over the past decade, we have developed methodology enabling efficient large-scale metabolomics analysis using cloud-based solutions (PMID: 30851093 and 30535405). Using this methodology, we have in collaboration with MD. Assoc. Prof Joachim Burman been able to stratify disease types in multiple sclerosis to an extent that have not been possible previously (PMID: 30214633 and 30678351).
A key objective of the project is to investigate population-based cohorts in multiple sclerosis and explore the long-term effects of stem-cell transplantation as a disease-modifying treatment of the disease using metabolomics methods. Our research is truly interdisciplinary and the overall goal is to develop methodologies that can be used for improved healthcare in multiple sclerosis.
You will use existing bioinformatics and statistical methods for data analysis as well as develop your own novel methods and pipelines to process and analyse data. You will primarily work with data from large human population-based cohorts generated in our mass spectrometry laboratory.
Further information on the activity of the research groups can be found at: http://www.caramba.clinic and https://neuro.uu.se/research/research-groups/neurology/projects/autologous-hematopoietic-stem-cell-transplantation-for-ms/
Requirements:
Additional qualifications: Having previous experience in using HPC/cloud-based methods for processing and analysing large-scale data is considered of strong merit.
