Uppsala University, Electrical Engineering.

The Division of Electricity is today part of the Department of Engineering Sciences. As of 2020-01-01 the Department of Engineering Sciences will be divided in three new departments. The Division of Electricity will belong to the Department of Electrical Engineering.

The division for Electricity represents Sweden’s leading research group in renewable electric energy conversion, and one of the leading groups in Ocean Energy in the world. Within the division, research activities are ongoing in several key areas of renewable energy, such as wind, wave, tidal and hydro power. The current global situation with fossil fuels as the main source of energy is unsustainable and the reason why new technologies need to be developed.

Project description:The electric grid in Europe and the rest of the world is facing a great shift and the electric transmission system is accommodating an increasing share of renewable energy sources. The Division of Electricity represents one of Sweden's leading research groups in renewable electrical energy conversion, and conducts world-leading research within wave, wind, tidal and hydroelectric power.

The doctoral project will be focused on studying grid integration and control systems for direct-driven permanent magnet generators used in renewable electrical energy systems, such as wave power plants. The project may include both simulations and experiments and numerical calculations. Within the project, for example, the inverter ability to control power to the network and its ability to meet the network requirements can be studied. The doctoral project will continue the work previously done within the group and will carry out the project in close collaboration with supervisors and other members of the research group.

Duties: The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Requirements: MSc or equivalent degree in the field of electrical engineering, energy systems, engineering physics or similar. Practical experience of experimental work, strong motivation and an ability to work independently is a merit. Industry experience is also a merit. Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
