Uppsala University, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences

Research group: The research group of Molecular Geriatrics is located at the Rudbeck Laboratory and is closely linked to the memory clinic at the Uppsala University Hospital. Our research is focused on treatment and diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. The research is conducted in collaboration with other research groups internationally and in Sweden, as well as with various pharmaceutical companies.

Duties/Project description: Biologics make up a large part of newly developed drugs and are also increasingly used in in vivo diagnostics. This is also true for neurodegenerative diseases, where immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies is one of the main strategies for treatment of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. This development is hampered by the blood-brain barrier, which hinders protein based drugs to reach the brain. The research group has therefore developed a concept for receptor mediated transcytosis of bispecific antibodies, which markedly increases their brain uptake, with the aim to use them for immunotherapy and in vivo diagnostics with positron emission tomography (PET). The over-all objective of the current project is to study and further develop the concept to gain a deeper understanding of the immunological and pharmacological mechanisms of the bispecific antibodies and to improve their properties for immunotherapy and PET diagnostics. The project will involve planning and execution of in vivo experiment as well as analyses using different imaging techniques, histology, biochemistry and immunological methods.

We are looking for a independent and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher who is expected to be active in leading and developing the project, to supervise students and to apply for research funding. The work will mainly be carried out at the Rudbeck Laboratory, Uppsala University.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in neurobiology, immunology, pharmacology, biochemistry/biotechnology or similar. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Experience from independent in vivo work is a demand and the applicant is expected to master immunological methods (FACS, immunostainings, ELISA) as well as different microscopy techniques. The applicant must have a good knowledge of written and spoken English.

Additional qualifications: Experience with cell culture, protein production and analyses, protein modifications, radiolabeling and medical imaging techniques is a merit. Documented experience with project leading and supervision of students is a merit.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.

Application: The application must contain a cover letter describing the applicant’s background and research interests, an updated CV including a list of previous publications, as well as copies of diplomas and certificates of higher academic degrees. Please also attach contact details (name, e-mail, phone number) to two referees.

Selection Process: Selection of candidates is based on qualifications, previous research experience within the field of research, and personal suitability.
