The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University has a strong and international research environment with over 90 scientists, including around 25 PhD students, 20 postdocs and 30 researchers and professors.

Duties/Project description: Aortic aneurysm occur in about 5% of the worlds population and ruptured aneurysm is responsible for 200000 deaths annually. The exact mechanisms behind the disease is not known. There are still no preventive treatment strategies or drugs available for the disease. The project of this study plan is focused on to investigate mechanisms of initiation and possible treatment of the disease and also includes aneurysm associated damage on organs such as the kidneys. The study include methods of experimental animal work, molecular biology and physiological analysis. The studies focus in particular on vascular reactivity by using ex vivo methods with help of wire-myography and the role of the mitochondria function and oxidative stress during development of aneurysm and kidney damage. The studies also include work with human material to identify treatment strategies and biomarkers. Participation in teaching and other departmental tasks (maximum 20%) will also be part of the job.

Requirements: The person we are seeking to recruit should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in medicine, biomedicine, biology, biotechnology or similar. Documented experience of molecular biology and biochemistry is a prerequisite. The candidate is required to have excellent skills in both spoken and written English. The applicant must be highly motivated, well-structured and be able to work efficiently both alone and in groups.

Additional qualifications: Previous work with mitochondria within relevant field and experience in methods of molecular biology for genotyping is of particular advantage for the position. Great emphasis is placed on personal fitness.
