The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a Research Engineer position to work with mechanical design for particle accelerators and instrumentation. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the second largest department at Uppsala University with more than 360 employees and 11 different divisions, situated at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. The department is hosting the FREIA Laboratory that performs research towards future particle accelerators, with special focus on the European Spallation Source (ESS), the High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC at CERN, the development of free-electron lasers, and the development of ultra-fast electron diffraction (UED) instrument in Uppsala.

The candidate is offered the possibility to work in an exciting modern research area in physics and will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with leading groups in experimental physics and engineering.

Project Description: The candidate will, in collaboration with other members of the FREIA Laboratory, work on the design and development of the superconducting ESS accelerator and advanced accelerators and instrumentation in general, and specifically on the development of high power electronics and microwave sources.

Work Description: Deliver engineering solutions satisfying the scientific requirements of high power electronics and microwave sources used in advanced accelerators and instrumentation. Regular reporting of the different development steps, regular communication with specialists on the different topics, at Uppsala and at other laboratories, participation in the operation and evaluation of experiments at the FREIA Laboratory. Projects are organized on national and international level and require occasional travel. Occasional shift work can be needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Be part of the FREIA team and support the team in low and high power RF measurements, calibrations and test setups.
  • Troubleshoot technical problems related to RF and electronics.
  • Produce concepts and prototype high power solid-state microwave amplifiers.
  • Evaluation of superconducting microwave cavities.
  • Development of DC-spark technology for research on microwave/vacuum breakdown effect.
  • Maintenance, operation and development of vacuum-tube based high power microwave amplifiers.
  • Produce calculations to validate designs.
  • Present such designs for peer and stakeholder review.
  • Present your work both in writing and verbally to a wide range of audiences.
  • Procure on-demand manufactured items and in-stock components.

Prerequisites: The applicant must have either a MEng or MSc degree in electronics engineering or related area. You shall demonstrate a drive and determination to achieve results, be open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned. You shall take responsibility, shall organize multiple tasks simultaneously, and have a genuine interest in research and technology.

The following experience and competency is required:

  • Experience in work with and knowledge in electronics.
  • Good oral and written proficiency in English.

The following experience and competency is an advantage:

  • Experience in work with microwave amplifiers.
  • Experience in work with CST Microwave Studio and HFSS.
  • Experience in work with ionizing radiation
  • Good oral and written proficiency in Swedish.
