Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is one of the largest and scientifically broadest Earth Science Department in Sweden and includes research programmes in Mineralogy, petrology and tectonics, Geophysics, Palaeobiology, Hydrogeology, Meteorology and Natural resource science.

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at http://www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/.

Duties/Project description. The purpose of the project is to investigate the ocean wave impacts on the atmosphere-ocean/ice interaction.  Those interaction processes and their affect extreme weathers and climate simulations are poorly understood, in particular in the cold climate. The new results from this project are expected to improve climate and forecast models. Particularly the focus of the PhD project will be on surface gravity waves and the impact on air-sea/ice interaction. Air-sea/ice interaction represents the transfer of energy and mass between the ocean/ice and the atmosphere. Thus, it plays a key role when simulating climate change and hazardous weather. Surface waves influence the air-sea-ice interaction processes. However, the mechanisms of surface-wave impact on air-sea/ice interaction are poorly understood, in particular in the marginal ice zone where (sub)mesoscale processes are common.  In this project, we will investigate the mechanisms of surface wave impacts on air-sea/ice interaction using measurements, and models. Wave-impacts on air-sea/ice interaction will also be introduced into atmosphere-wave-ocean/ice fully coupled models in order to reduce the uncertainties in climate scenarios and the forecast results of hazardous weather (in particular cold extreme weathers, e.g., polar lows). The PhD student will have enough freedom to choose the specific topic in the air-wave-sea/ice interaction area.

Requirements. The applicant shall have a university science degree in meteorology or similar. Other technical or science degrees may also be considered, in particularly oceanography. The successful candidate shall have a solid base in mathematics, physics, and basic computer skills.

The PhD position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties and teaching at a level of at most 20%.

Additional qualifications. Previous experience of programming and numerical modelling is considered a merit.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1.
