Three PhD student position in biogeochemistry/microbial ecology are available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Limnology.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

The limnology program conducts research and teaching on the ecology and biogeochemistry of inland waters, from microscopic to global scale.

Project description: We are seeking three PhD students to undertake projects in the field of biogeochemistry and with focus on the cycling of organic matter. The PhD students will work in a collaborative research group focusing on the persistence and degradation of organic matter in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The research spans across a broad set disciplines and fields of expertize, including analytical chemistry, geochemistry, microbial ecology, and ecosystem science. The overall aim of the research is to understand how the stability and degradation of organic matter is controlled by environmental factors, microbial functional diversity, and the diversity and composition of organic matter. The projects are funded by the Swedish Research Council, Formas (a Swedish Research Council for sustainable development), and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for a PhD-student position the applicant must hold a master degree (or equivalent) in a field of relevance to biogeochemistry and microbial ecology. To be qualified, experience and knowledge is required in one or or several of the following fields: analytical chemistry, geochemistry, microbial ecology, limnology and marine ecology, soil science. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English. In the evaluation of candidates, we will emphasize personal qualities such as independence and teamwork skills.

Qualifications desired: The ideal candidates would have previous experience with lab work requiring good attention to detail and field work. Some basic programming skills and familiarity with statistical approaches are highly valuable.

Starting date: 2020-02-01 or as otherwise agreed.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.

Position: Temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. The graduate program covers four years of full-time study. The position can be combined with teaching or other duties at the department (maximum 20%), which prolongs the employment with the corresponding time. The salary will be set according to local agreements.
