The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University (www.igp.uu.se) has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and in a number of educations at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 420 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 345 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 700 affiliated people.

The unit for Molecular Tools, now recruiting a postdoc, is active at the international forefront of research to develop advanced technologies for biomedical investigations at levels of DNA, RNA and protein. Their techniques have enjoyed wide uptake world-wide and have been successfully commercialized by spin-outs and licensees. The present postdoctoral position is also connected to the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies (SCAS; http://www.swedishcollegium.se) and its program Measurable Man, investigating how we can better understand human biology at molecular levels, with a perspective on the effects on society. SCAS is a scholarly community, founded in 1985, which forms part of an international network of similar interdisciplinary collegia, and Measurable Man is one aspect of its activities in the natural sciences.
This position is hosted jointly by SCAS and the IGP department. The effective workplace of the successful applicant will be IGP, but the holder of this position will also be affiliated with SCAS as a Thunberg fellow and participate in interdisciplinary SCAS events. (Carl Peter Thunberg, 1743-1828, was a disciple of Carl von Linné and his successor as professor in botany and medicine.)

Work tasks:

• Full-time research in the field of Molecular Tools, by contributing to the development of molecular techniques to investigate the biology of man at molecular levels, and applying these for purposes of understanding disease and to improve drug development and healthcare.
• Work with techniques including oligonucleotide-assisted reactions for analysis of DNA, RNA and proteins, aiming for improved sensitivity, specificity, and higher throughput at lower cost in research, biotechnology drug development and medicine.
• Supervision of master- and doctoral students. - In collaboration with team members contribute to a strong, intellectually active research environment and a well-functioning lab infrastructure.
• The successful applicant will also interact with members of SCAS to promote its program Measurable Man.

Required qualifications: 

• PhD in biomedicine or similar, with advanced competence in molecular techniques and with a broad perspective on their applications.
• To be eligible to apply you must have a PhD completed within three years of the application deadline. If you received your PhD earlier but special circumstances exist you may still be eligible to apply.
• Experience of working with DNA-assisted techniques for molecular analysis.
• Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English. 

Desirable qualifications: 
Experience working with biophysics and enzymology of DNA and proteins, and applications for molecular analysis. Insights in needs, opportunities and concerns regarding molecular measurements of man.
