Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

Researcher in hydrology with focus on uncertainties in hydrological climate change impact studies at the Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). For more information about the department, please visit: http://www.geo.uu.se/

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programs science can be found at http://www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/.

Duties/Project description:

We are recruiting a researcher in hydrology at the Department of Earth Sciences, Programme for Air, Water and Landscape Sciences. The position is part of a research project funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR). The goal of the project is to fill existing knowledge gaps in hydrological climate change impact studies. We will strengthen the basis for robust projections of future climate change impacts on hydrological conditions by developing new dynamic and multi-dimensional methods to reduce uncertainties. The project is a close multidisciplinary collaboration of experts within climatology, hydrology and environmental research. The candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with the project partners. Tasks include among others bias correction of climate model output, hydrological modeling and the analysis/evaluation of different hydrological model structures and parameterization techniques.

Requirements:

The applicant shall have a PhD degree in hydrology, physical geography, meteorology, environmental assessment, climatology, or similar. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English. Knowledge in mathematics and physics is a requirement, as well as previous experience in programming.

Additional qualifications:

Experience with hydrological modelling, bias correction of climate model output, analysis/evaluation of different hydrological model structures and/or parameterization techniques is a merit. Expertise in Matlab or R is desirable.

The ranking will also accord weight to the candidates assessed competence to work independently in combination with the ability to interact effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment.

Application:

The application should include a cover letter shortly describing your personal motivation for applying to this position and your previous research experience, a CV, copies of the examination certificates, PhD thesis, contact details of two references and other possible documents the applicant wishes to include. In addition, a brief statement (maximum 2 page) of what in your opinion are the main sources of uncertainty in hydrological climate change impact studies and how to potentially reduce them should also be included. We would also like to know the earliest possible date for starting.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.

Salary: Individually negotiated salary.

Starting date: 2020-01-01.

Type of position: full-time position (100%), for one year.
