Uppsala University, Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology

The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University (www.igp.uu.se) has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Medical Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and in a number of educations at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 400 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 340 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 600 affiliated people.

Project description:
A PhD student position is available for highly motivated individuals with interest in tumorbiology, tumorimmunology and tumorpathology at the laboratory of Lecturer MD PhD Patrick Micke at Uppsala University, Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology. The doctoral student will perform analyses overall aiming to identify novel prognostic as well as predictive biomarker for NSCLC patients with main focus on components of tumor-immune-signaling and resistance to checkpoint inhibiting therapy. Approaches will include the analysis of RNA sequencing data at deep level coupled to complementary in situ methods such as RNA scope in order to obtain spatial information. Additionally, advanced multiplexed immunofluorescence (Vectra Polaris system) will be performed for comprehensive immune- and signaling-profiling. A central aspect of the doctoral studies will be to learn how to set generated data in a broader context.
The key duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research projects and third cycle courses. Interest in acquiring and expanding of bioinformatics skills will be required for performance of the projects. Doctoral students are expected to actively involve themselves in the research aims of the group and to contribute to a well working lab environment including also laboratory duties and organization. The position will be extended with the time devoted to teaching to allow four years of full time graduate studies.

Qualifications:
The applicant should have MSc degree or MD or similar in a relevant area (e.g. tumorbiology, tumorimmunology, pathology). Strong merits would be experience in bioinformatics, in situ tissue profiling and/or primary tissue culture. Very strong merit would be experience in pathological evaluation of tumor tissue and/or biomarker research with proven track record. Excellent skills in oral and written English are required. The applicant must be team oriented and open-minded.
