Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Project description: There is an opening for a Ph.D. student position belonging to the ATLAS group at Uppsala University (Sweden) in collaboration with the University of Bonn (Germany), with an anticipated start date in November 2019. The successful candidate is expected to pursue research work at both universities and be jointly supervised by the two ATLAS research groups in Uppsala and Bonn. Both are members of the ATLAS collaboration, which operates the ATLAS detector that collects LHC proton-proton collision data at CERN in Geneva. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the data analysis performed by the ATLAS collaboration, and in particular be involved in the search for Higgs boson pair production with two tau leptons and two b-quarks in the final state, as a probe of the Higgs potential in the Standard Model but also as a possible signature of new resonances, e.g. in models with an extended Higgs sector. Other experimental responsibilities, such as strong participation in performance studies (especially for detector objects initiated by tau leptons and/or b-hadrons) and software development, are also expected.

As part of a four-year Ph.D. program, it is envisioned that the successful candidate will spend two years at each host institution. The financial support will be commensurate with standard compensation for Ph.D. students in particle physics at the institute where the successful candidate is based. Research stays at the CERN laboratory are also a possibility during this four-year period, and opportunities for pedagogical development can also be offered.

Requirements: Candidates should possess (or should be in the process of obtaining) a Master’s degree in physics or in a relevant field of study. Software and programming skills are considered key assets, as well as communication skills in the English language. Prior experience in data analysis and a background in particle physics are also assets.

Applications including curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, at least one letter of reference (preferably from the master thesis supervisor) and copies of degrees attained, should be uploaded to https://uu.mynetworkglobal.com/ and, in parallel, be sent to Prof. Dr. Jochen Dingfelder and Dr. Tatjana Lenz at the University of Bonn. The deadline for submitting applications is 6 October 2019, and these will be reviewed soon after.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/?languageId=1.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
