Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe, with about 200 employees. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans, from the formation of the Earth until today. We investigate the development of life and the Earth over billions of years, and study the connections between the athmosphere and oceans with regards to climate change and sustainable development.

The Centre for Environment and Development Studies, CEMUS, has since the start 1992 done student-led education within the broad and interdisciplinary environmental and sustainability area. Read more about our educational model and courses at www.cemus.uu.se.

Work tasks:

As a teaching assistant at CEMUS you work with planning, administration, delivery and after-reporting of a university course. The work is based on the course syllabus and is carried out together with a colleague in close collaboration with guest lecturers, the course's work group (consisting of experienced university teachers, researchers and professors), as well as CEMUS Director of studies and educational coordinators. The work is both externally focussed, and individual. It includes having contacts with guest lecturers and students, as well as course planning, literature, preparation of seminars, workshops and course administration. Part of the work is also to creatively build on experiences from previous course runs and pass on one’s own experiences to future teaching assistants.

•         2 positions, Sustainable Economic Futures, 15 credits. New course

 

Extent 17%, period 2019-10-01 – 2020-09-30

•         1 position: *Livsfilosofi, 7.5 credits 

•         2 positions, *Värderingar, Världsbilder & Visioner, 7.5 credits

•         1 position: *Teknik, Makt & Mänsklighetens framtid, 7.5 credits

•         1 position: Sustainable Design, 7.5 credits

•         2 positions, Actors & Strategies for Change, 7.5 credits

•         2 positions: Perspectives on Climate Change, 7.5 credits, New course 

Extent 15%, period 2019-10-01 – 2020-09-30

•         1 position: *Hållbar utveckling B, uppsatskursen, 7.5 hp

Extent 10%, period 2019-10-01 – 2020-09-30

•         1 position, Sustainable Development: World Views and Discourses (part of the Mater programme in Sustainable Development), credits.

In the application, specify which course(s) you are interested in working with. Not that you are only allowed to work at the maximum of 50% as teaching assistant.

 

Qualifications:

Ongoing university studies (higher education), se the Swedish regulations Högskoleförordningen 5 kap.

Good computer skills and good English language skills spoken and written is necessary. For courses in Swedish (marked with *), good language skills in Swedish in speech and writing are necessary.

Emphasis will be placed on your personal suitability, such as your ability to listen and collaborate and the skills to meet and give space for people from different backgrounds and with different opinions. You also need the ability to take initiative and to be able to solve problems in a constructive way, as well as being able to independently manage and complete tasks within given time frames, even during temporary work peaks.

Desirable/other merits:

Work life experience from work with student-led courses and experience of student activating teaching methods is also a merit.
