Uppsala University, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University conducts research and teaching at the highest international level with about 250 employees, of which about 40 are doctoral students. The research is focused on three areas: biochemistry / molecular cell biology, genomics and microbiology / immunology. The Jern research group at IMBIM now seeks a motivated postdoctoral candidate interested in working with retrovirus-host evolution.

Project description: The Jern research group studies coevolution among retrovirus and their host species (https://imbim.uu.se/forskargrupper/genetik-och-genomik/Jern_Patric/). The group takes advantage of the latest advances within large-scale sequencing projects and uses bioinformatics to study traces of retroviruses in genomes of humans, domestic animals and other vertebrates to increase understanding of retrovirus evolution and effects on host genome function and evolution.

Duties: Conduct research within a project aimed at studying retrovirus diversity and coevolution with host species from analysis of large-scale sequencing data and endogenous retroviruses that we have identified in vertebrate DNA and collected in databases. The work includes bioinformatics and method development for identifying and annotating sequence variation in endogenous retroviruses within and between species and their populations to study spread and to identify evolutionary interactions between retroviruses and their hosts. The work includes the publication of scientific articles. Some teaching may be included.

Qualifications: Doctoral degree in bioinformatics, virology and / or genomics. Documented experience in bioinformatic analysis methods as well as large-scale sequence analysis and population genetics is a merit, as are programming skills in R, Perl or Python. Very good oral and written proficiency in English is required. The candidate is expected to take initiative and develop the project as well as willing to collaborate with the group's other members as well as with national and international partners. Emphasis is placed on personal suitability.

Eligibility: For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within a maximum of three years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, maternity leave, in trade unions, etc.
