The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems.

A position as a research associate in aquatic biogeochemistry is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, with the sub-department of Limnology. https://www.ieg.uu.se/limnology/research/

Project description: This project focuses on the biogeochemical cycling of organic matter in lake ecosystems. This study involves detailed characterization of organic matter using high resolution analytical methods and measurements of bacterial respiration and other indicators of water quality. Candidates with a general interest in ecology and the natural sciences, particularly freshwater lakes, streams and soils systems are encouraged to apply.

Duties: The candidate will be trained and become responsible for preparing samples for detailed molecular analysis and running samples on a variety of standard instruments used to measure water quality. The position involves a fair amount of lab work, the organization and collection of data from instruments and data processing. Some lab methods will involve working in a contamination free environment.

Qualifications required: It is important that the candidate should have good lab skills and an interest in the ecology of lakes and carbon cycling. The candidate should have experience and knowledge in ecology and chemistry, specifically analytical chemistry, organic chemistry or biochemistry and microbiology. Experience with solid phase extraction, spectrophotometric methods and the use of optode sensors is required. Personal characteristic such as accuracy and independence is needed for the position.
