The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Ongoing research within the program Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU) includes modelling of energy systems, analysis of energy security and energy transitions, studies of ecosystem services, fishing and aquaculture, as well as environmental risk assessment and remediation of contaminated sites. NRHU also hosts a research node in Climate Change Leadership (CCL) and the associated Zennström Visiting Professorship. The CCL environment is characterized by an interdisciplinary methodology that can capture the complexity of modern society and promote reduced emissions, including new approaches to collaboration between academia, politics, and civil society. The CCL environment aims to create and utilize new perspectives that expedite the transformation of energy systems and their environmental impact.

Project description: Based in the CCL/NRHU, the PhD project will focus on facilitating Sweden’s transition to a 100% renewable energy system and aligning the country’s decarbonisation efforts with climate mitigation ambitions contained in the Paris Agreement. By implementing local carbon budgets, the objective is to identify and explore required targets, pathways and processes that are necessary to achieve rapid and deep reductions in energy use and emissions on the local level. A number of Swedish counties will be investigated in terms of their existing low-carbon objectives and strategies, and how they can be aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The project will analyse and quantify opportunities for the rapid substitution of existing end-use technologies with more efficient, sustainable alternatives. The research results are expected to provide an integrated perspective of both how Sweden is impacted by global developments in the energy sector, but also the potential for Sweden to lead the way in engendering deep and rapid reduction of emissions on the local level.

Requirements: The candidate should have an MSc degree in Environmental Science, Earth Science, Energy Technology, Energy System Engineering or equivalent, as well as have a strong interest for interdisciplinary and applied research. Practical experience in carbon accounting and/or knowledge of climate change policy framework are particular merits. Familiarity of or work experience with Swedish communes are merits. Personal qualities, such as dedication, motivation and independence are valuable. Very good written and spoken English skills are required. Good Swedish language skills are merits.

Terms of Employment: The PhD position comprises four years of full-time postgraduate studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position can include up to 20% of teaching and administrative work, which extends the employment period with a corresponding time. Teaching can include, for example, courses in Energy, Water and Food (1GE059) and Energy Security in Local and Global Energy Systems (1GV334).
