Uppsala University, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences

The laboratory of Molecular Geriatrics is situated at Rudbeck laboratory and is closely connected to the clinical activity of the memory disorder unit at the University hospital. Our research is focused on cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and is performed in collaboration with national and international research groups.

Duties/Project description:

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of age-related neurodegenerative disease and causes much suffering for the patients and their families. Knowledge about the cellular mechanisms behind the initiation and spreading of the disease is still very limited. Decades of research have focused on neuronal abnormalities during the disease progression, but recently more and more attention has been given to glial cells. Being the most numerous glial cell type, astrocytes have great impact on the brain environment and may constitute a potent treatment target. The overall aim with our research is to clarify the involvement of astrocytes in the initiation and progression of Alzheimer’s disease and to investigate their therapeutic potential. The PhD project will be focused on studies on tau pathology in astrocytes by investigations of advanced cell culture systems and analysis of patient samples.

Requirements:

We welcome applications from highly motivated candidates who have a Master of Science degree in n biomedicine, biology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical science or equivalent education. The applicant needs to have a good knowledge in written and spoken English.

Additional qualifications:

Experience of working with advanced cellular model systems for neurodegenerative disease is highly qualifying, as well as experience of culturing human astrocytes and performing immunocytochemical and immunohistochemical stainings. Furthermore, it is desirable that the applicant is familiar with several of the following techniques: aggregation assays, ELISA, Western blot, fluorescence, time-lapse and electron microscopy.
