Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för fysik och astronomi

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities. Duties/Project description: We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious postdoctoral researcher for experimental work on dynamical and non-equilibrium properties of magnetic and correlated electron systems. The overall aim of the project is to explore the speed limits for the switching of functional materials relevant, for instance, in information technology. Coherent x-ray pulses from free electron lasers or synchrotrons will be used to directly observe electron, spin and lattice dynamics on nanoscale dimensions and femtosecond to picosecond timescales. There will be a close collaboration with groups developing a theoretical description of the measured processes and groups growing state-of-the-art materials.

The Department of Physics at Uppsala University offers a world-class environment for interdisciplinary materials research with close links between experiment and theory. The project will be carried out in the group of Prof. Hermann Dürr, who recently moved from Stanford to Uppsala. Research will be carried out using coherent x-rays from the MAX IV synchrotron in Lund/Sweden and the European XFEL in Hamburg/Germany.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Physics or equivalent. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. You should have a strong background in condensed matter experiments using femtosecond lasers or x-rays. Fluency in both written and spoken English is an absolute prerequisite.

Additional qualifications: Prior experience with magnetism or strongly correlated electron materials is an advantage.

Your application should contain a letter describing yourself and your qualifications and research interests. It should contain a CV, copies of relevant degrees, contact information for at least two reference persons, and a full publication list. Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in the evaluation, for example periods of parental leave, should be mentioned in the CV.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
