The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University (www.igp.uu.se) has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Medical Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and in a number of educations at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 400 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 340 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 600 affiliated people.

Project description:
A 4-year PhD student position is now available for highly motivated individuals with interest in integrative cancer research, in the laboratory of Dr Sven Nelander (nelanderlab.org). The goal of the project is to develop a new therapeutic strategy against the brain cancer glioblastoma, based on direct in vivo reprogramming of the tumor cells. Working in a team of both theoretical and experimental researchers, you will use two new and powerful experimental methods to analyze drug effects in patient-derived brain tumor cells. First, a new profiling method, termed drug-SEQ, is adapted to globally investigate the effect of targeted therapies on multiple cellular pathways. Second, innovative gene editing and single cell approaches to investigate how cells change over time in the presence and absence of targeted interventions. Together, these approaches will be used to clarify how cells from a specific patient individual can be reprogrammed to reduce or reverse tumor growth in vivo. In the project, you will collaborate with top level experts in neuro-oncology, computational biology, technology and mathematics. The project is co-supervised by three highly skilled experts in RNA sequencing/single cell technology, in vivo modeling of glioblastoma, and radiotherapy (Dr Milena Doroszko, Dr Ramy Elgendy, Dr Marika Nestor), and tightly linked to a dynamic international center in brain tumor and systems biology at IGP and the Rudbeck laboratory. The successful candidate will devote most of the time towards his/her research level education. Other service activities within the department, e.g. education and administrative work can be included within the framework of the employment (maximum 20%). The position will be extended with the time devoted to teaching to allow four years of full time graduate studies.

Qualifications:
The applicant should have MSc degree in a relevant area. For this particular position, we strongly encourage candidates with well documented experimental experience in one or several of the area(s) of cancer biology, stem cell biology, RNA sequencing, pharmacology and genomics. To maximize medical relevance, projects in our lab involve in vivo experiments, and such experience is of interest. We also strongly encourage candidates with a technological interest, and a willingness to engage in analytical work with bioinformatics experts, and appreciate if you clarify your level of statistics/computer training, or other experience in cross-disciplinary work. We encourage candidate with a record of originality and creativity. Excellent skills in oral and written English are required.
