The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University constitutes a broad and international research and teaching environment with over 250 scientists, including nearly 40 PhD students. Research activities within the department focus on three principal domains: Biochemistry & Molecular Cell Biology, Genomics, and Microbiology & Immunology.

Description: The candidate will work in a research group at Uppsala University, primarily within ENABLE, a collaborative European project in antibiotic discovery and development. The project is supported by the EU Innovative Medicines Initiative as part of its New Drugs 4 Bad Bugs programme. The aim of ENABLE is to develop novel antibiotics against Gram-negative bacteria. Multiple projects are worked on concurrently and at different stages of development.

Duties: The successful candidate is expected to carry out a range of duties including microbiology testing on novel compounds, selection and genomic analysis of resistant mutants and development of novel bacterial strains. Moreover, the candidate is anticipated to be involved in the theoretical parts of the projects by setting up new testable hypotheses based on results obtained within the frame of the project. Within the duties of the position is aiding in lab management. Some teaching may be included.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for this position, the applicant must hold a degree in infection biology or microbiology. Experience and knowledge of molecular methods in bacterial genetics and bacterial physiology. Excellent spoken and written English is required. You must be able to work both independently as well as a part of national and international team-members. We are looking for someone with a suitable personality.

Additional qualifications: Masters’ degree in infection biology or microbiology
