Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences

The Department of Engineering Sciences is one of the largest at Uppsala University and conducts research within a number of different technical subjects. The department has approximately 360 employees and has its activities at the Ångström Laboratory and Campus Gotland. The position is at the Division of Solid state physics, the Ångström Laboratory.

3 month temporary employment at full time (100 %) 2019-10-01 – 2019-12-31.

At the Division of solid state physics we do both basic and applied research. In general we investigate physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials and compounds whether it will be used as thin films for spintronic applications, magnetic nanoparticle based bioassays, coatings for smart windows, gas sensors, photocatalytic coatings or to create new magnetic materials for environmentally friendly energy technology.

The project focuses on magnetic materials that can improve today's spintronics. Materials that will be investigated are ferro- and antiferromagnetic materials that can be deposited as thin films on known semiconductor materials. In the project, we aim to understand the underlying mechanisms for damping spin waves and generation spin currents in magnetic heterostructures. In addition, we will contribute to the development of THz-spintronics by studying spin dynamics in antiferromagnetic thin films.

Duties: Research on thin films of magnetic Heusler compounds and their use in spintronics applications.

Qualifications: Doctoral degree in solid state physics or equivalent with focus on thin magnetic films of magnetic Heusler compounds and their use in spintronics applications.

Good experimental skills in thin film deposition of half-metallic magnetic materials, especially magnetic Heusler compounds, are required. Furthermore, the position requires good experimental skills with regard to studies of spin dynamics and spin currents in magnetic heterostructures.

A strong motivation and ability to work independently is desirable, and good verbal and written skills in English are required.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
