Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences has 140 employees and a number of visiting researchers and fellow students. The department has twelve research groups with a common administration and we are doing research and teaching in pharmaceutical cell biology / biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical and drug addiction, pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacometry, clinical pharmacy, bioinformatics, imaging mass spectrometry, molecular neuropharmacology, immunology, biological drugs / biotechnology as well as toxicology and drug safety. Placement: The PhD student position is associated with the research group Pharmaceutical Bioinformatics.

Duties: The successful candidate will be part of the interdisciplinary research project Hierarchical Analysis of Temporal and Spatial Data (HASTE) within the research group of Assoc. Prof. Ola Spjuth, see https://pharmb.io/. Co-supervisors will be Prof. Carolina Wählby and Assoc. Prof. Andreas Hellander.

 The HASTE project is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) and aims at developing new, intelligent ways of processing and managing very large amounts of microscopy images in order to be able to leverage the imminent explosion of image data from modern experimental setups in the biosciences. Industry collaborators are Vironova AB and AstraZeneca AB. More information about the HASTE project is available at http://haste.research.it.uu.se.

This PhD project has a focus on machine-learning with quantifiable confidence or probability, and in particular working with and applying Learning Using Privileged Information (LUPI), Online Compression Modeling and Probabilistic (Venn) Predictions on image data from the collaborating industrial partners AstraZeneca and Vironova.

The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with other project partners towards the goals of the project, and is expected to participate in regular research visits to the sites of the industrial partners.

 The position includes 20 % teaching.

Requirements: The highly motivated candidate, with an academic degree at the Masters level or equivalent (at least 240 credits), should be experienced in programming and have a strong interest in research on AI/machine learning on image data from life science applications. Excellent skills in oral and written English are required.

Applicants will be ranked by the supervisor in consultation with the Department Research Education group. The Committee for Research Education at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine-Pharmacy will admit the PhD student. Salaries will follow local guidelines at Uppsala University.

The holders of PhD student position primarily devote their time to own research-level education. Other duties at the Department involving teaching and administrative tasks maybe included in the framework of the position (max 20 %). The PhD program normally lasts for 4 years research, plus maximally one year of teaching.
