Uppsala University, Department of Medical Cell Biology

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University has a strong and international research and teaching environment with over 100 scientists, including around 25 PhD students, 20 postdocs and 30 researchers and professors.

Duties: The successful candidate is expected to conduct research understanding the mechanisms related to secretion and how these mechanisms fail in diabetes. This involves experimental work using high-resolution live cell imaging, molecular biology, super-resolution imaging, image analysis, culturing cell lines and primary cells, and active participation in the day to day operation and mission of the lab, including supervision of research students and participation in the writing of grant application and publications.

The project aims to understand mechanisms behind calcium-dependent exocytosis in hormone-secreting cells, primarily by using advanced microscopy. The focus will be on how the SNARE protein VAMP8 catalyzes membrane fusion of insulin granules and other vesicles in pancreatic beta cells. Methods include live cell and superresolution microscopy, image analysis, molecular biology, and cell culture. See also https://www.mcb.uu.se/res/groups/sb/.

Requirements: The applicant must hold a PhD degree or a foreign qualification equivalent to a PhD. The candidate is expected to have a strong track record of high quality research in an area relevant to the position, and should be competitive for external funding. Expertise in high resolution TIRF microscopy of cellular trafficking, and experience with pancreatic beta cells  is required.

Additional qualifications: Applications are judged according to eligibility, previous experience and scientific excellence within related fields, and personal suitability.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
