Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences of Uppsala University is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet). Please visit: www.geo.uu.se for more information about the department.

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at http://www.geo.uu.se/research/luval/.

Duties:

The postdoc will work within the frame of the project: “Large-Scale Atmospheric Variability driving changes in the Terrestrial Carbon Cycle and Storage”, which aims to relate diagnostics of the large-scale atmospheric circulation and variability to remotely-sensed, in-situ measured and modelled terrestrial carbon flux and storage changes. The exact focus of the research is flexible, but the work should advance our understanding of how changes in atmospheric variability can drive short- and long-term changes in terrestrial carbon fluxes and storage at regional scales. The postdoc will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching/supervising duties, up to a maximum of 20% of his/her time.

Requirements:

A doctoral degree in Climate Science, Earth Sciences, Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology, or related disciplines obtained before the starting date. Experience in either atmospheric/climate studies or the terrestrial carbon cycle is required. The applicant must be proficient in spoken and written English.

To qualify for a post-doctoral position, the applicant must have a Ph. D. or a corresponding degree. The applicant's Ph. D. degree must have been obtained less than 3 years before the application date. However, periods such as sick leave or parental leave can be added to the 3-year period.

Additional qualifications:

Documented experience in handling large datasets and performing statistical analyses, appropriate computing and coding skills, as well as prior experience in handling satellite-derived data products are a merit. The ranking of the candidates will also accord weight to evidence of independent thinking, quality of peer-reviewed publications and ability to interact effectively in a multi-disciplinary research environment.

The application should contain:

  1. A Curriculum Vitae.
  2. A short research statement (maximum 2 pages) describing some knowledge gaps in the research area covered by the project that the applicant would like to explore during the postdoc.
  3. A list of publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
  4. Two references (names and full contact details).

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: Soonest 2019-10-15 (15th October), or at a later agreed date.

Type of position: Temporary full-time position (100%), for two years.
