Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The successful candidate will join the Department of Physics and Astronomy (www.physics.uu.se) and carry out her/his PhD research in the field of experimental high-energy neutrino astrophysics as a member of the group participating in the IceCube Neutrino Telescope and its planned extension.

IceCube is a neutrino telescope in operation at the geographic South Pole. The telescope consists of about 5000 optical modules observing one cubic kilometre of the very clear ice in the Antarctic glacier. IceCube detects neutrinos with energies up to a few PeV from the most extreme environments in the Universe. We also search for low energy neutrinos from supernovae and for indirect evidence of dark matter, and investigate the properties of the neutrinos themselves. More information can be found at www.icecube.wisc.edu. The IceCube collaboration is planning to increase the size of the current array in order to extend the sensitivity of the detector. An extension of the optical part, as well as the addition of a radio array, is currently under development, and is expected to be deployed in the next few years. There might exist the possibility that the successful candidate will have the opportunity to travel to the South Pole to participate in activities related to this upgrade.

We are looking for a qualified and highly motivated PhD student candidate with an interest in working at the intersection between astrophysics and particle physics. Good programming and data analysis skills are essential. Previous experience in astrophysics, neutrino physics and/or detector development is a merit. A strong academic record and good communication skills in English, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, is also required.

The application should include a statement of research interests, a CV, a copy of degrees and grades, a copy of your Master thesis and published articles or other relevant material (if applicable) to the address below. The names and contact information for 2-3 references should be included.

The starting date for this position is expected to be in early Autumn 2019.

In addition to the research duties, the PhD candidate will have to fulfil 40 course credits during the duration of the studies. PhD positions are funded for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years if department duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching) are undertaken.
