Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the most complete such academic departments in Europe. Our research focuses on subjects that range from the Earth’s core to the atmosphere, on scales from submicroscopic structures in minerals to the formation of mountains and oceans. We have teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Our courses offer a wide range within the geoscience area and several of the department's programs have received the highest rating in evaluations by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Högskoleverket) and the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet).

The Geophysics unit: at the Department of Earth Sciences consists of about 50 personnel, including about 20 PhD students. The Geophysics program is currently running projects involving studies of major crustal structures of the Baltic Shield, urban geophysics, novel geophysical solutions (hardware and software) for deep mineral exploration, geological storage, scientific drilling, earthquake seismology, development of instruments, time-series processing and numerical modeling methods for electromagnetic data applied to near-surface and deep crustal-scale studies. The geophysics program runs its own ~600-channel (cabled and 1C/3C wireless) seismic system, a state-of-the-art 120-3C seismic landstreamer acquisition system, and develops and uses modern processing and imaging algorithms

Duties: PhD candidate will conduct research within a series of planned projects inside and outside Sweden sponsored by a number of industry and research funding organizations in particular the H2020-funded Smart Exploration project (www.smartexploration.eu). A major component of the project involves 3D hardrock seismic imaging of mineral deposits and their hostrock structures, data processing, as well as equipment (source and receivers) developments combined with case studies. The PhD candidate will work within a larger research team including experts from different countries. In the continuation of the PhD study, multi-component seismic imaging of near-surface geological structures is also envisaged.

Requirements: We are seeking a motivated candidate with strong interest in research who has an academic magister/master- or engineering degree, or equivalent, in geophysics, geology, physics, earth sciences or a similar field (formally, four years of university study including a minimum of 1 year at advanced level are required). Experience inn seismic field data acquisition, working with seismic data, Linux/Unix and programming skills are important and will be considered a merit. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required. The project includes fieldworks and the candidate should be willing to spend time outdoor for data collection alone and together with other people involved in the search; a driving license may be needed. The position is full-time for four years and may include up to 20% of research or teaching assistantship.

Applications must include a CV, certified copies of diplomas and certificates, and a personal letter describing yourself and your relevant experience (maximum 2 pages). The application should also contain a summary of your master thesis
