Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

This position is located at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) at Uppsala University. ICM has a strong and international research and teaching environment and is organized in six major research programs; Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology, Structure and Molecular Biology. In total the department has over 200 scientists, including 60 PhD students. Please read more at http://www.icm.uu.se

Project description
The postdoc project will be in Roos’ newly started research group in the computational biology program. The research is focused on quantum chemistry and free energy methods for molecular simulations of biomolecular problems relevant to drug design. A goal is to be able to accurately describe systems where both polarization and dynamic effects are important, with the aid of combined methods. The group have a special interest in metalloproteins. Enzymatic reactions play an important role in most biological life processes, and a large number of enzymes are dependent on metals for their function. Interactions with metals are challenging to describe by classical molecular modeling methods, which constitute a limitation in today’s computer based design of new drugs.  Please read more about us on http://www.icm.uu.se/bbbi/.

Work duties
As a post doctor in the project described above, you will use and develop quantum chemical and free energy methods to study interactions between organic molecules and metals, and apply these to design new metal binding groups and study metal specificity in metalloenzymes, i.e. how different metals are used by enzymes for catalyzing different reactions. The work tasks include computer simulations of ligand binding and enzymatic reactions, development of computational methods, literature studies and design of data sets.

Requirements
We are looking for a motivated postdoc with a PhD degree in computational chemistry, structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry or other related subject considered relevant by the employer. In depth knowledge in theoretical chemistry, molecular modeling or other for computational chemistry relevant subject is required. You should be highly motivated in your research, spend energy and commitment on your work, have excellent problem solving analytic ability, and have a large interest in the research subject. You are expected to work independently and take initiatives while being able to successfully interact, collaborate and create good relations with other researchers and colleagues. You have good programming knowledge and experience of working in a Linux environment. Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is a requirement, since the position is in an international environment.

To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor your PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Meriting
Experience of molecular modeling, quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, modeling of enzymatic reactions, medicinal chemistry and structural bioinformatics.

Your application should include
1) motivational letter where research interest, knowledge, modeling experience and why you are interested in this position is explained (maximum 1 page),

2) CV including full publication list,

3) study documentation, degree certificate and academic grades, and

4) minimum two references including names, email addresses and telephone numbers. State how they are professionally related to you (e.g. PhD thesis advisor).

Selection from eligible applicants will be made with special emphasis on scientific knowledge, independence and collaborative qualifications, which will be assessed by references and interviews.

Interviews can continuously take place during the announcement period.
