Uppsala universitet, Institution ecology and genetics

A PhD student position in Tropical Forest Ecology is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, programme of Plant Ecology and Evolution.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

Project description: You will work in our group (https://bobmuscarella.weebly.com/index.html) that is broadly focused on understanding how environmental heterogeneity influences patterns of plant community diversity and species distributions - with an emphasis on tropical forests. We integrate information on species traits, geographic distributions, and demographic performance to address questions related to drivers of diversity and ecological responses to environmental change.

The successful applicant will contribute to an ongoing project aimed at linking tropical tree physiological strategies, habitat associations, and measured demographic rates (e.g., growth and survival) across broad environmental gradients in Puerto Rico. The student will develop an independent research line within the broad scope of this project, depending on interests and experience, which should be expressed in the cover letter. There will be extensive opportunities and encouragement for interactions and research visits with project collaborators.
