Uppsala University, Department of Modern Languages

The Department of Modern Languages has around 60 employees who conduct research and education in several languages and literatures. There are four main research areas: Finno-Ugric languages, German, Romance languages, and Slavic languages. Both earlier and later language stages are studied and the theoretical and methodological scope is wide.

We now announce three PhD positions at the Department of Modern Languages. An applicant who has been accepted for one of PhD positions will be active in one of the department’s four third-cycle subjects – Finno-Ugric languages, German, Romance languages, or Slavic languages, the syllabi of which you can find here.

Conditions/Project: Doctoral studies extend over a 4-year period during which the PhD-student will receive a salary as an employee of the department. Doctoral students are expected to engage in full-time study and research, and to participate actively in the department’s activities. Students are encouraged to combine the position with teaching responsibilities up to a maximum of 20%, which is to be carried out against an appropriate prolongation of the contract.

An applicant may also be considered qualified if s/he has acquired the corresponding competence in other ways.

The applicant must have at least a one-year master’s degree in one of the following third-cycle subjects or equivalent to fulfil the special eligibility requirements: Finno-Ugric languages, German, Romance languages, Slavic languages.

The department will apply for exemption from the language requirements in Swedish if an applicant otherwise is assessed to have the best qualifications. However, knowledge in Swedish is a qualification.
