PhD student position in Nanotechnology with focus on development of functional nanoporous materials for clean technology applications - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Department of Engineering Sciences is one of the largest institutions at Uppsala University and conducts research within a number of different technical subjects. The department has approximately 360 employees and has its activities at the Ångström Laboratory and Campus Gotland.

The PhD student position is at The Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials, the Ångström Laboratory.

Project description and work duties: The Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials have extensive experience in the development of nanoporous materials. Our researchers have also been at the forefront of the development of functional porous materials including mesoporous magnesium carbonate (MMC) and highly porous amorphous calcium carbonate (HPACC) as well as zeolites and other framework materials (MOFs, CIFs etc). As well as materials development, a significant amount of our work is related to optimisation of these nanoporous materials for various applications, including controlled drug delivery, gas separation, water purification and catalysis.

We are searching for a highly motivated PhD student to join our division and strengthen our research competence in the development of functional nanoporous materials for clean technology applications. Examples of clean technology applications include greenhouse gas separation/adsorption, water purification as well as sustainable catalysis.

Typical work tasks include the synthesis and characterisation (e.g. X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, gas adsorption) of porous inorganic carbonates, oxides and other porous framework materials (e.g. ZIFs, CIFs, MOFs), modification (e.g. post-synthesis) of nanoporous materials, testing of materials for clean technology applications. Part of the work will be carried out in collaboration with national and international collaborators.

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20 %).

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:

• has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
• has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
• has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Qualifications: MSc or equivalent in chemistry, materials science or similar disciplines related to the research field. The applicant should have a strong interest in materials or inorganic chemistry, especially on porous materials. Experience with porous materials synthesis, general materials characterisation techniques such as X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy or electron microscopy would be an advantage.

Proficiency in oral and written English is essential, the applicant should be able to interact and communicate effectively with national and international collaborators. The ability to work in a collaborative environment with other researchers is of high importance. The applicant should have the ability to manage and run scientific projects in a well-organised manner and be able to present the research work to a wide range of audiences.
