Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer Courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

The department and UCDP, is now looking for a research assistant for a 7 months fulltime position.

Tasks:
The tasks consist of assisting the project management primarily with coding violent events from news articles and other sources in UCDP's database and with text writing to varying degrees. In addition, the role will contain data management, among other things, visualization.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in peace and conflict studies*
  • Good knowledge of political violence and about theories of peace and conflict
  • Independent analytical ability
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Previous experience of similar data collection work within the conflict area. This also applies to managing and working with finished conflict data.

*We believe that a master's degree is needed to guarantee an advanced understanding of theories and concepts concerning war and peace, as well as an in-depth understanding of the research process. In addition, a completed master thesis demonstrates a great habit of independent work. This background is necessary in order to adequately perform the intended work.

Merits/other:
Previous experience of working with eg Python or R, as well as with data visualization.
We will also take personal suitability into consideration.
