Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för geovetenskaper

The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden’s largest and broadest institution of its type, with approximately 200 employees. Our research ranges from the Earth's core to the atmosphere, from microscopic minerals and fossils to the formation of mountains and oceans, and in time from the formation of the Earth up to today. We investigate the development of Earth and the evolution of life over billions of years and study the relationship between the atmosphere and the oceans with regard to climate change and sustainable development. For more information see www.geo.uu.se.

Ongoing research within the program Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU) includes studies of ecosystem services, fishing and aquaculture, risk assessment and remediation of contaminated sites, and modelling of future energy systems and analysis of energy security. NRHU also hosts the Zennström guest professor in “Climate Change Leadership” (CCL). NRHU is responsible for the Masters level education in sustainable development and several other courses in the use of natural resources and energy systems with respect to sustainable development. See http://www.geo.uu.se/research/natural-resources-sustainable-development and www.uu.se/ccl.

Since its inception in the early 1990’s The Centre for Environment and Development Studies (CEMUS) has initiated and expanded the space for transdisciplinary student-led higher education within the broad areas of environmental- and sustainability sciences. See www.cemus.se for more information about the education system and courses offered.
