Duties/Project description:

The announced position is part of the HASTE project (http://haste.research.it.uu.se/). HASTE is an SSF (Swedish Strategic Foundation) funded project with focus on developing smart systems for efficient and reliable management and analysis of large scientific datasets. It is a collaborative project consisting of academic and industrial partners. The project is structured around three aims and the announced position is in the aim related to smart distributed systems capable of creating, managing and prioritizing between computational and storage e-infrastructure based on information hierarchies.

The project: Management of large data streams using smart filters and rule-based strategies

Scientific equipment such as high-throughput microscopes can generate massive amounts of data. In order to provide a scalable platform for analyzing the available data, distributed computing infrastructures (DCI) in the form of cloud, fog and edge computing are central. Each environment has its own capabilities based on the available resources. Efficient utilization of the available resources requires an intelligent control plane that enhances productivity. Driven by use-cases in HASTE, this project the focus will be on the following two areas:

1 – Design novel architectures for storage hierarchies where different storage tiers contain datasets according to defined requirements. The requirements will be defined using rule-based strategies that will be executed by the control plane. The novel architecture seamlessly selects the storage tier according to the defined strategies.

2 - Design and develop smart lightweight filters to gather summary statistics about the incoming data stream. This process will make the datasets self-explanatory. The research focus will be to work with lightweight algorithms that can be used on data streams. This phase also includes the representation of large datasets in an abstract yet meaningful format.

Requirements:

The candidate should have a Master of Science in computer science, computer engineering, data science, scientific computing or equivalent with documented experience of distributed systems and data analytics. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are an absolute requirement. We expect our students to do internationally competitive research and publish at top venues.

The position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching). The candidate will be expected to teach in English or Swedish.

Additional qualifications:

Experience of cloud computing, distributed data management or data stream analysis will be considered a merit.

Application:

The application should include a statement of purpose, motivating preferred research directions. The application should further include a description of past experience, a CV, copies of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of Master thesis (or a draft thereof), relevant publications, and other relevant documents. The candidates should indicate the earliest feasible starting date of employment and are encouraged to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons.
