The Geophysics Program at the Department of Earth Sciences consists of about 50 personnel, including about 20 PhD students. The Geophysics program is currently running projects involving studies of major crustal structures of the Baltic Shield, urban geophysics, novel geophysical solutions (hardware and software) for deep mineral exploration, geological storage, scientific drilling, earthquake seismology, development of instruments, time-series processing and numerical modeling methods for electromagnetic data applied to near-surface and deep crustal-scale studies. The Geophysics Program runs its own ~ 600-channel (cabled and 1C/3C wireless) seismic system, a state-of-the-art 120-3C seismic landstreamer acquisition system, and develops and uses modern processing and imaging algorithms.

It is also well equipped with a suite of other geophysical instrumentation, including electromagnetic instruments (e.g. 11 magnetotelluric stations), modern downhole logging equipment, gravimeters etc, as well as laboratory instrumentation for paleomagnetic studies. The program also runs the Swedish National Seismic Network (SNSN), consisting of about 70 permanent broadband stations, and has an extensive equipment pool for passive field studies. Duties:
The researcher will work on the integration of physical properties, geophysical, and geological data, obtained within the framework of the COSC deep drilling project (www.icdp-online.org/projects/world/europe/are-jarpen) and other projects. Several high-resolution data sets will be considered, including seismic, magnetic, gravity and magnetotelluric data collected from central Jämtland. The work will focus on developing and advancing methodologies to integrate laboratory petrophysical data and geophysical data. In particular the research will target 1) up-scaling of laboratory and borehole logging measurement results to the geophysical scale, 2) statistical applications on laboratory data for extrapolation to geophysical scale, 3) integration of geological data, from the microstructural scale to regional scale.

The aim of the research is to provide a strong basis for which detailed geophysical data can be interpreted in terms of its geological origin. The integrated data will be used to test different hypotheses on orogenic processes, such as extrusion mechanisms and the mechanisms of megathrust earthquakes, with direct application to the Caledonian orogeny, but also applied in general to other orogenies (for example the Himalaya-Tibet). The researcher is expected to actively be involved in the on-site science operations at the COSC-2 drill site during Spring/Summer 2020 and participate in other field work relevant to the research and Geophysics Program.

Requirements:
We are seeking a motivated candidate with strong interest in research who has a PhD degree in geophysics, geology or related subject. The candidate should have experience and knowledge on the collection and interpretation of geophysical data, and preferably strong analytical/laboratory experience, handling petrophysical and microstructural data. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required. Activities are likely to include field work and the candidate should be willing to spend time in the field collecting data; a driving license is necessary. The position is full-time for 18 months and may include up to 20% of other activities (supporting other field works, field courses and teaching).
