Uppsala University, Department of Ecology and Genetics

A position as a project assistant in bioinformatics is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, evolutionary biology.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

Project description: Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) fungi form symbiosis with the majority of all terrestrial plants. They are obligate symbionts and complete their life-cycle underground. Furthermore, they are multinucleate and have endosymbiotic bacteria – together this makes it challenging to obtain pure DNA and sequence genomes of AM fungi. To get around these limitations, we have developed a single-nuclei sequencing method for generating and analyzing AM fungal genomes. We are looking for a project assistant for bioinformatic analyses of these genomes. The project includes generating and analyzing AM fungal genomes for within- and between-species variation. It also includes compiling results and present them in figures and text.

Qualifications required: To be eligible for the position, you must have commenced a university education in biology, within a relevant field. You must have relevant experience of ecology and genetics through studies or working life. Practical experience of Bash/unix scripting and bioinformatic analyzes using SPAdes, Freebayes, OrthoMCL and AliView/Mafft is a prerequisite. Candidates must be able to express themselves fluently in spoken as well as written English. Ability to organize and structure your work is also a must.

Qualifications desired: Shown ability to present results in writing and figures is essential.

Application: The application should include 1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests and why you want this position, 2) a short description of your education, 3) a CV and 4) the names and contact information to at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone no.). The application should be written in english.
