Uppsala University, Department of Medical Cell Biology

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University has a strong and international research environment with over 100 scientists, including around 25 PhD students, 20 postdocs and 30 researchers and professors.

Duties/Project description:

1-2 fully funded 2-year postdoctoral positions in the field of pancreatic islet cell biology, with focus on the role of primary cilia in the regulation of islet cell function, is available from September 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter, in the lab of Dr. Olof Idevall-Hagren.

The lab

The laboratory of OI-H consists of 2 postdocs, 2 PhD students, 1 technician and several undergraduate students. The group was formed in 2015 with the aim to understand how organelles in the insulin secreting pancreatic β-cells communicate with each other, and how this communication is changed in diabetes. The laboratory techniques range from primary mouse and human cell cultures, traditional biochemistry, advanced live-cell fluorescence microscopy, development and application of molecular detectors and actuators (including optogenetics).

The project

For this project we seek a highly qualified and dedicated postdoc that will focus on the role of primary cilia-selective signaling in both acute and long-term regulation of pancreatic islet cell function. The project combines large data set analysis (proteomics, RNAseq) with real-time imaging of cilia signaling, aiming to identify links between cilia-specific signaling and cellular functions. Teaching is included, to a maximum of 20%.

Requirements: We seek a highly motivated candidate with a solid background in cell biology and bioinformatics. Documented expertise in the acquisition, analysis and annotation of RNA sequencing or proteomic data sets is a requirement. The candidate is required to have strong skills in English and proven abilities to publish at a high international level with at least one first-author publications. Motivation to work independently and be responsible for the daily management of his/her research project in coordination with other members of the group is expected. The candidate will also be actively involved in the training and co-supervision of other group members and students. Shortlisting will be applied.

To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Additional qualifications: Previous experience of molecular biology techniques, cell culture and fluorescence microscopy are also desirable. Previous knowledge of cilia or islet cell biology is not a prerequisite but will be considered favorably.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
