Uppsala University, Department of Game Design, Campus Gotland

The Department of Game Design’s activities are all located at Campus Gotland in Visby. The Department offers international and national study programmes in game design at Bachelor and Master degree level (first and second cycles respectively) and freestanding courses in game design, expression and game programming. Research in game design and related areas is under way.

Duties

Research, teaching and summative assessment in game design. Teaching includes course coordination, supervision and course administration. The position may also include administrative tasks.

Duties also include monitoring development in the field of game design and the overall social trends with a bearing on work at the University.

The purpose of the Assistant Senior Lecturer position is to qualify the holder for teaching appointments that are subject to more stringent eligibility requirements.

Period of employment

The post of Assistant Senior Lecturer may be held for up to four years. An Assistant Senior Lecturer can apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer. An Assistant Senior Lecturer who is deemed suitable and meets the promotion requirements will be promoted to, and offered permanent employment as, Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Under the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, to be eligible for employment as an assistant senior lecturer, a person must hold a PhD or have acquired equivalent research expertise, and meet the requirements for teaching expertise. For this position, the applicant is required to have completed a PhD in game design or attained equivalent research expertise. In particular, such applicants who have obtained their PhD or acquired the relevant expertise during the five years, at most, preceding the end of the application period will be considered.

The applicant must have completed training as a teacher in higher education, comprising five weeks, that is relevant to the work or, alternatively, be deemed to possess corresponding knowledge. In the latter case, the academic teacher training may be implemented during the first two years of employment. One requirement is that the applicant’s teaching expertise, research proficiency and professional skill must be relevant to the subject content of the appointment and the duties it will include.

Under Uppsala University's Appointment Regulations, it is also a general eligibility requirement for teachers to possess the personal qualities necessary to perform the duties of the position well.

To be eligible, applicants must have the ability to teach in Swedish and English. Any appointee who is initially proficient in only one of these languages must be able to teach in the other as well within two years.

Assessment criteria

In the selection among eligible applicants, particular emphasis will be laid on research expertise. Owing to the nature of the position as qualifying the holder for promotion, applicants’ research and teaching qualifications are assessed primarily in qualitative terms. Accordingly, an applicant’s quantitative advantage that may be explained by the person’s relatively long employment experience will not be a decisive criterion.

Research expertise

In the assessment of research expertise, primary consideration will be given to quality of scholarship. Research expertise relates, first, to research qualifications and, second, to the applicant’s capacity to contribute to future development of both research and education. Weight will also be given to the scope of the applicant’s research, in terms of both breadth and depth.

Teaching expertise

Teaching expertise will be assessed as carefully as research expertise. Teaching skills relate to educational and teaching qualifications, and teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of the applicant’s teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be treated as important. Moreover, weight is assigned to the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, and the ability to connect the teaching with research. Teaching expertise must be well documented so that its quality, too, can be assessed.

Administrative and other expertise

These forms of expertise are significant for the appointment and will carry a great deal of weight. Administrative expertise is shown in, for example, the applicant’s ability to plan, organise and prioritise work in a manner that is efficient and adapted for the purpose, and through the ability to define and adhere to time frames. Moreover, weight will be assigned to the ability to engage in interaction, both within the discipline and with the community at large. Expertise includes overarching planning of work; the ability to manage resources in a manner that reflects work priorities; and the ability to work in a structured way, based on awareness of objectives and quality.

In addition, particular importance will be attached to the applicant’s capacity to contribute to future development of both research and education.

When the University seeks to appoint new teachers, the applicant selected will be the person who, following an overall qualitative assessment of skills and proficiency, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the duties concerned, and to promote favourable development of the work.

The Recruitment Committee may come to use interviews, trial lectures and references. The applicant should therefore submit a list of referees familiar with the applicant’s professional skills and also personal qualities that have a bearing on the position, such as a capacity to work with and lead others, and which working methods the applicant uses.

Personal circumstances (such as parental leave, part-time work owing to care of children, trade union assignments, military service or the like) that may count as qualifying in the assessment of qualifications should be stated in the applicant’s account of qualifications and experience.

Uppsala University values the qualities that diversity and gender balance bring to its activities. We therefore welcome applicants of all genders and with different family backgrounds, abilities and life experience.
