Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

Postdoctoral position in Wind Energy Modelling

The Department of Earth Sciences offers education and research with a unique extent and is considered in international evaluations to be one of Europe's most complete geoscientific institutions. This scope is represented by experienced teachers and researchers with expertise covering everything from rocks and volcanoes, to earthquakes, weather, wind power and climate, from the development of life on earth to dinosaurs, and from lakes to glaciers, carbon storage and sustainable energy systems.

Description of the working environment:
The Wind Energy unit conducts activities within teaching, research and collaboration projects and focuses on the planning and design of wind energy and energy transition. The activities are located on Campus Gotland and today the section consist of about 20 persons. The education consists of teaching on campus and distance at basic and advanced level.

The research group has a long experience of high-fidelity modelling of wind turbine wakes, wake interaction, forested boundary layers, farm modelling and farm to farm modeling, i.e., ranging from small scales to atmospheric scales.

Job description:

The focus area for this position is to further develop turbine modelling approaches such as actuator disc, line and sector models to further be able to evaluate loads in wind farms. The aim is here to be able to use high-fidelity modelling with body force approaches to be able to investigate wind farm flows with focus on flow physics, loads and farm optimization.

The position mainly involves research but teaching can also be a part at maximum 20%.

Requirements:
To be eligible for a position as Post-doc, the applicant must hold a PhD or equivalent. The applicants PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application date. The PhD can be older than three years if there are special circumstances. Such special circumstances can be periods of sick leave, parental leave etc, which are deducted from the three-year period. The requirement for this position is a PhD with focus in fluid mechanics and numerical modelling. Experience in solid mechanics, i.e., a connection to load assessment of wind turbines is also of special interest. It is required to have experience in CFD tools such as ElipSys3D and/or Open Foam.

Ranking criteria:
In ranking eligible candidates, special importance will be given to scientific skills in relation to the subject area specified. In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.
