Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

This position is located at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) with a focus on understanding biological factors important for growth in and colonization of host and selection for antibiotic resistancestarting. ICM has a strong and international research and teaching environment and is organized in six major research programs (please read more at http://www.icm.uu.se). The current position is located within the research group of Sanna Koskiniemi, within the Microbiology program.

Project description
The proposed project will take place in an active research group in the Microbiology program at ICM. The focus of this research group lies in understanding the role of bacterial toxin delivery systems in biology. Bacterial toxin delivery (e.g. bacteriocins, type 6 secretion and contact-dependent growth inhibition systems) has previously been shown to be important for antagonistic interactions, allowing bacteria with these systems a competitive advantage in environments where resources for growth are scarce and shared with other bacteria. In this project, the focus lies on understanding how these systems contribute to bacterial colonization of a new host.

Duties
The position is a fulltime equivalent (100%) but divided between two different projects so that 60% will be within the Koskiniemi research group and 40% of the time will be spent on projects with the Andersson group. The projects in the Andersson group focus on understanding selection of antibiotic resistance in animal models with primary focus on mice work.  Other duties include general bacteriological laboratory work (pure-cultures, growth rates, strain constructions), bacterial infection experiments in mice, and molecular biological work such as PCS, Sanger and Illumina sequencing and bioinformatic analyses. The position includes some administrative duties (up to 10%) related to the project; e.g. contacts with collaborators, animal facilities and participation in and scheduling of meetings. Scientific writing and editing as well as research presentations are a natural part of the position. Teaching (up to 20%) can be included in the position if there is a need at the microbiology program.

Qualifications
We are looking for highly-motivated applicants with a PhD in infection biology and documented experience in working with bacterial infections in mice. The applicant is expected to design and drive multiple project regardin bacterial infections in mice independently. Documented expertise in bacterial infections of mice and bacteriological laboratory work is therefore required for the position. As the position is located in a international setting, good written and oral skills in English is a requirement. Finally, significant weight will be given to personal suitability such as; personal maturity, flexibility, loyalty, articulateness and stability. The applicant is expected to work well with others, have good problem-solving ability, be service minded and self-going.

Meriting:
- Previous documented experience of work using flow cytometry and microscopy techniques as well as ability to create genetic mutations in bacteria are meriting

-Molecular biology skills such as PCS, Sanger and Illumina sequencing and ability to perform bioinformatic analyses are meriting.

-Previous teaching expertise and relevant pedagogical training (for university teachers) can be meriting if in a relevant area for the course given within the microbiology program.

2) a letter describing your research interests, skills and motivation to apply for the position (max 2 pages)

3) diplomas

4) list of publications

5) up to three reference letters.
