A position as a postdoctoral fellow in functional mycological is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Evolutionary biology.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

Project description: The majority of fungi have submerged lifestyles, living inside, for instane, soil, wood or roots and we know them only because we can document their DNA sequences in samples from natural complex substrates. Many of these unknown fungi form symbiotic interactions with other organisms and therefore occur in organism complexes that can only be studied as a whole. Confocal microscopy with in situ hybridization is a method that enables the study of submerged fungal diversity, life cycles and ecology in samples from their natural environment. The project aims to map the life cycle of globally occurring soil and root living fungi by in situ hybridization and microscopy in controlled experiments as well as in natural samples. The tasks include developing species and class specific probes, mapping morphological life cycle changes and documenting these in field samples.

Qualifications required: Doctoral degree in biology. Experience of mycology and confocal microscopy is a requirement. When selecting among eligible applicants, special emphasis will be placed on scientific skills. When assessing scientific merits, experience of fungal species detection in complex natural structures will be highly regarded. The candidate must have very good ability to communicate in English, in both speech and writing.

To be eligible the candidate must have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to this, completed less than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the degree can/could be completed earlier. Special reasons can for example include leave due to illness, parental leave, work within a union.

Qualifications desired: Experience of c independently developing FISH probes and working with non-model organsims is highly merit. As well as experience of international collaborations.

Position: This is a fulltime temporary position for 24 months. Individual salaries applied.

Access: 2019-07-01.

Instructions for the application: The application should include 1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests, briefly describe your education and motivation of why you want to work as a postdoctoral researcher/fellow and why you are suitable for the position, 2) a CV, 3) a copy of your PhD degree, your grades and a copy of your thesis, 4) name and contact information to at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone no.), 5) relevant publications.
