Research and teaching at the Department of linguistics and philology covers approx. twenty different languages and linguistic subjects as well as computational linguistics. These include Ancient Greek and Latin, Turkic Studies, Hindi, Swahili, Chinese, and many of the important languages and cultures in the Middle East. Computational linguistics and general linguistics are also part of the department.

Doctoral studies extend over a 4-year period during which the PhD-student will receive a salary as an employee of the department. Doctoral students are expected to engage in full-time study and research, and contribute to and participate in the department’s activities. Teaching and/or administrative tasks may be involved up to a maximum of 20%, which is carried out against an appropriate prolongation of the contract.

Project description:

For this position, we are seeking a candidate with a solid background in Sinological studies, who is very well motivated and interested in Sinological research. Special importance will be attached to the quality of the proposed project, and the feasibility of completing it within the stipulated time, as well as the candidate’s suitability and qualifications for the task. Particular importance will be attached to the candidate’s competence in Chinese (written and spoken) in order to pursue the research project independently, handle relevant research materials as well as aspects of research ethics, particularly concerning ensuring access to research materials within practical and ethical limitations.

The dissertation project should fall within the areas of expertise available at the department, and the final form of the dissertation project will be decided in collaboration with the supervisor. Interviews can also be included in the selection process. Teaching on PhD. courses as well as supervision of PhD. dissertations is carried out in Swedish or English.

Requirements:

: To qualify for a doctoral position a candidate should hold a master’s degree in Chinese/Sinology or equivalent. During the selection process the quality and scope of the MA thesis will play an important role. A basic requirement is a high level of written and spoken English.

The application should contain:

  • A letter of intent describing your research interests and motivation for PhD studies (maximum one page)
  • A CV containing (i) a description of your education, (ii) a list of academic results, (iii) a list of any academic publications, and (iv) professional experience relevant to academic research (maximum three pages)
  • An authorized copy of your Master’s Degree (or equivalent) including course grades
  • A copy of your Master’s thesis (and an English summary in maximum ten pages if it is not in English)
  • A research proposal which (i) states a research question, (ii) describes the methodology and work plan, and (iii) contextualises the expected results in relation to the state of the art (maximum five pages including references). The final form of the dissertation project will be decided in collaboration with the supervisor.
  • Other documents which the applicant would like to submit.

The application may be written in English or Swedish.

Additional qualifications:

Knowledge of German and French is viewed as an additional qualification, but depending on research topic knowledge of other languages may also be necessary.
